He noticed that his parents always made a sound, a double "m," before they said, "Goodbye," on the phone--echoed it after his mother hung up to experience how it felt.
They couldn't sabotage her confidence, or good mood; she would thrive like a stubborn hedge of roses in the Valley of Ashes.
